Affirmative Action Case June 24, 2013 The affirmative action case before the Supreme Court is headed back to an appeals court. The Supreme Court of the United States of America has voted on the latest affirmative action case before the highest court in the land. With a 7-1 vote, the Supreme Court told an appeals court that their precedent was misinterpreted with respect to reviewing the affirmative action policy at the University of Texas at Austin. So what does this mean in the grand scheme of college admissions and the practice of affirmative action, you ask? According to Ryan J. Reillys piece in The Huffington Post on the affirmative action case, The decision is a provisional victory for Abigail Fisher, a white woman who claimed that UT-Austin unconstitutionally discriminated against her after the states flagship university rejected her application in 2008 under its race-conscious admissions program. UT-Austin will now have a much more difficult job of proving its program constitutional under the standard the Supreme Court clarified on Monday.  Justice Elena Kagan, the former dean of Harvard Law School, recused herself, presumably due to her involvement with the case while she served as President Barack Obamas first solicitor general. Killings among young men of color has risen in these past few years during altercations with the police. African-American and Latin-American men are dying for reasons such as rush of judgement and possible acts of racism. These acts that are being committed are considered the term of police brutality. Police officers seem to be shooting unarmed men of color as the ultimate solution when being confronted with these altercations. These three examples I will provide will show how many young minority men are being killed at unprecedented rates across America. First example to show these inhuman acts police officers are committing would be the case of a Latino male of the name of Ricardo Diaz-Zeferino. Ricardo was a 24-year-old from Los, Angeles, California. Ricardo Diaz called police dispatchers to report a stolen bike that belonged to his brother. Diaz-Zeferino decided to take actions into his own hands and went on a search with a friend named Eutiquido Acevedo Mendez. Luckily Ricardo a nd Eutiquido found his brothers missing bike outside a CVS Pharmacy. Shortly after, two police officers arrive to the CVS Pharmacy spotting the bicycle with a match of the description Ricardo gave the dispatchers. They also spot Ricardo and his friend Eutiquido near the bike and order them to â€Å"get their hands up†. Ricardo and Eutiquido quickly compile to the officers orders. The mother, Sarah Penn, was kept out of the families decisions by the father, Adoniram Penn, until one event that lead to her taking drastic actions while her husband was gone. There are many religious symbols and actions taken by â€Å"Mother† within the story. Through the story Sarah moved from a feeling of servitude to her husband, to a feeling that she was in servitude to the Lords will and this led her, in the end, to hold power over her husband. This excessive use of social media and technological devices causes a feeling of self-sufficiency when receiving the wanted attention, on Facebook it could be in the form of ‘likes’ on ones profile picture. As Facebook, and other social media platforms, create a feeling of self-sufficiency for the narcissist and is the perfect platform for creating an appealing version of oneself without the risks of real life rejections, many people stick to the Facebook version of themselves instead of having to face rejections in real life, especially when it comes to love.
